Your CITY and DISTRICT meetings

JAiME for SCHOOLS June Feature is Mid-Metro Academy’s Workshop, “Yes, You Can Homeschool through High School!” As more and more parents look for alternative options to public school, homeschooling can feel like a very natural extension to parenting. There really is no right or wrong. The biggest hurdle is choosing the style of homeschool that works best for you. Homeschool Academys are valuable for their resources and support.

Mid-Metro Academy’s Approach to Learning

“We’re committed to a dynamic, interactive, face-to-face learning environment. We understand that students learn by doing and by interacting with each other, not via lectures that attempt to “download” from a teacher’s brain to theirs. Our classes prepare students for success in life and in the 21st-century marketplace by enhancing their problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills. Homeschoolers have always been innovators, and so are we. Our Wednesday Career Track classes for high school students use the STEAM approach (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) to help give students a competitive edge as employees and/or entrepreneurs. Our Monday classes cover all the important bases for secondary school education; many offer a flipped-classroom style that allows students to access course content at home and engage in collaborative learning on campus.”

Meetings

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO GIVE FEEDBACK BEFORE THE SCHOOL BOARD VOTES ON THE FINAL FACILITY PLAN. Click HERE to link to the SoWashCo Schools Facility Planning page – watch the June 1st Workshop Meeting – Review the proposed plan – Give feedback between June 2-9.

“A recommendation for approval of the final plan, with review and comment, will be brought before the School Board during the School Board Business meeting on Thursday, June 15, 2023. Pending School Board approval, referendum election will be held on Election Day in November.” (SoWashCo Schools)

IN 2022-23, SOUTH WASHINGTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT’S ESTIMATED RESIDENT SCHOOL AGE POPULATION IS 22,053. “399 nonresidents enrolled in the South Washington County Public Schools while 547 residents attend a public school elsewhere through open enrollment.”

Nonpublic School Students

In the South Washington County School District, 5.9 percent of all enrolled students attended a traditional nonpublic school and 2.0 percent of enrolled students were homeschooled in 2021-22. That means 8.0 percent of the school age population learns through a nonpublic setting.

According to Hazel Reinhardt’s report in February, “The number of homeschooled children increased in the South Washington County School District in 2020-21 and has remained at that higher number since then.” Public Charter Schools in the district have also seen an increase in the last ten years. They have grown from 616 students in 2013 to 1498 students in 2023. “6.3 percent of South Washington County School District residents attended a charter school.”

Transportation Reimbursements

Little Known FUN FACT: The School District is required to provide transportation to all school age residents, whether public or nonpublic. SoWashCo says on their website, “Minnesota Statutes require public school districts to provide equal transportation for resident students attending nonpublic schools located within the district.” When there is not an option available in the district though, a reimbursement can be requested. Unfortunately there is not a lot of information about this on the district website, but there is on the Minnesota Department of Education website .

Form provided by your private school and also by SoWashco Schools.

When I chose to send my children to private schools outside the district in 2021, I was initially unaware of this reimbursement program. The district and my private schools were really good about mailing me my form several months before it was due in June. It definitely helps pay for all the additional miles I put on my car every year.

If you are unsure whether you qualify for this program, give the transportation department a call …
