January Meetings

There is something about January that makes us reflect, assess and reorganize. January is the month of FRESH beginnings and RENEWED hope.

Finance has been the topic of the day at meetings around town, and I will give a brief overview of three.

The COUNTY OF WASHINTON adopted their final budget and levy for 2023 on December 13th.

Their fiscal year runs January 1 to December 31.

The budget for major expenditures this year is $ 3 7 8 , 9 2 5 , 4 0 0

The amount to be collected from property owners is $128.4 million.

Washington County also sets the home property values. The Staying in Touch, No 4 – 2022 report says the median income home went up 20% between 2021 and 2022. So despite the county’s tax rate decrease of 14.5%, residents are seeing a 4.6% increase in their bill over 2022.

The CITY OF WOODBURY adopted their final budget for the 2023 tax year on December 14 at the city council meeting.

Their fiscal year runs January 1 to December 31.

The budget for expenditures this year is $ 1 4 5 , 2 0 0 , 0 0 0

The amount to be collected from property owners is $44.7 million.

Residents will see a 7.2% increase in their bill over 2022. FUN FACT found at the city link provided below, “The city’s General Fund budget has grown from $10.7 million in 1995 to $47.6 million for 2023. At the same time the city’s population has grown from 31,500 in 1995 to approximately 78,900 in 2022.

The 833 SOUTH WASHINGTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT certified their final levy for the 2023 tax year on December 15 at the school board meeting. Unlike county and city, the school district does not adopt its final budget until June 2023.

Their fiscal year runs July 1 to June 30.

The Preliminary Expenditures projected budget for this year (approved June 16, 2022) across all funds is $ 3 4 9 , 0 3 9 , 1 7 3 .

The amount to be collected from property owners is $112.5 million.

Residents will see a 8.6% increase in their bill over 2022. This is due to the “Voter Approved Operating Referendum” for general operating expenses, “Long Term Facilities Maintenance (LTFM)” for deferred maintenance costs, and debt payments.
